Questions and answers

Do I need an account?

No. Selah has no account of its own. Your prayers and journal are saved on your iPhone. If you choose to turn on sync, you sign in to your own Google Drive, or use your iCloud Drive, only to keep a copy there.

Can Google or Apple read my data?

No. If you turn on sync, Selah encrypts your prayers and journal on your iPhone before anything is uploaded, and Google or Apple store only the encrypted files. They can see that the files exist, their size and a small preview with a date and four counts, but not what you wrote. We never receive the data or the key.

What is the difference between sync and a backup file?

Sync keeps an encrypted copy in your own Google Drive or iCloud Drive up to date, so you can restore it on a new phone or use it on another device. It is off until you turn it on. A backup file is a one-off copy that you make yourself with Export backup under Settings, then Sync & backup, and save wherever you choose. Set a passphrase to encrypt it; without one, anyone who gets the file can read it. Both need no account with us.

How do I turn on sync?

Open Settings, then Sync & backup, and choose iCloud Drive or Google Drive under "Sync with". Selah first looks for an existing backup and never overwrites one. If it finds none, it creates your backup and shows your recovery key. Save it somewhere safe before you tap Continue. You can see it again later under Settings, then Sync & backup, then Recovery key.

What happens if I lose the recovery key?

Your prayers on your phone are not affected. The recovery key unlocks your encrypted copy on a new phone. On a new iPhone, Selah first looks for the key in iCloud Keychain and only asks for the recovery key if it is not there. If you still have a phone that has the key, open Settings, then Sync & backup, then Recovery key to see it again or to tap Create a new key. If the key is gone everywhere, nobody can open that encrypted copy, not even us. On the Restore screen, tap Start fresh. Your prayers on the phone stay, the old copy stays in your cloud until you delete it, and you can turn sync on again for a new backup.

How do I move to a new phone?

With sync: on the new phone, open Selah, go to Settings, then Sync & backup, and choose the same cloud. When Selah says it found a backup, tap Restore. It uses your key from iCloud Keychain if it can, otherwise enter your recovery key and tap Unlock and restore. Without sync: on the old phone use Export backup, move the file to the new phone, and use Import a backup there. Importing merges the file with what is on the phone: where both have the same item, the more recent change wins.

How do I delete everything?

Deleting the Selah app removes your prayers, journal and settings from that phone. If you used sync, the key stays in your iPhone's Keychain (and iCloud Keychain, if you use it) so Selah can find your backup again. Inside the app you can delete a prayer, a group (with its prayers), a session, a journal entry or a whole diary. A copy in your own cloud is not deleted when you turn sync off or delete the app. To remove it, delete it in your Google or Apple account. Backup files are wherever you saved them, so delete them there.

How do I set reminders?

Open Settings, then Reminders, and tap to add one. Choose the time and the days, and what it should open: a session, a group, a prayer, a new journal entry, or just a nudge. You can also set a reminder on a prayer with Remind me, and on a session with Reminder. Allow notifications when your iPhone asks. Hide text in notifications is on by default in Settings, and while it is on, a reminder does not show your prayers on the lock screen.

How do I turn on the app lock?

Open Settings and turn on App lock. Selah then asks for Face ID, Touch ID or your device passcode, as your iPhone allows, each time you open it. Your device needs a passcode for this to work.

Which devices and languages does Selah support?

Selah is made for iPhone with iOS 16 or later. It runs on iPad in iPhone compatibility mode. It is available in English and in Portuguese (Brazil and Portugal). Choose the language in Settings, then Language.

What do you do with my data?

We collect none. Read the privacy policy.
